Back to Helen Ga. Things to Do
Helen Georgia Betty’s Country
Store
This is the most amount of time I think I have ever spent in a grocery
store. Visiting this place is like a step back in time, and a selection
of so many items I have never seen or heard of, bean salsa, peach salsa,
hot chow chow, strawberry cider, cherry cider, Orange Crush sodas, dried
fruits, a hot sauce collection to die for, along with your standard
staple grocery store items such as frozen foods, deli fresh cut meats
including fresh rainbow trout, and frog legs, and choice cuts of steak
ready for the grill, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Betty’s Country
Store includes a huge beer and wine section that would out do most any
city grocery store, and a candy section that would take any adult back
in time. There is a reading section that boasts a handful of books of
local interest including, but certainly not limited to southern recipe
books, recipe books on how to prepare opossum, frog legs, and cow tongues.
There are books on nearby hiking trails, waterfalls, mountain and Appalachian
folklore, you name it. You can spend a good half hour in this section
of the store alone.
There is a small section for fishing and minimal camping supplies,
as well as charcoal, and live fish bait (No Crickets, you have to drive
down the street to Kwik Sac for those)
I rarely ever visit Helen Georgia without going to Betty’s Country
Store at least once. It’s rare I will ever go a visit without
at least eating one of the fresh made deli sandwiches. You can have
your sandwich made on regular flat white loaf bread, which is awesome.
Each sandwich comes with a cookie, a bag of chips, and a pickle spear.
Betty’s country store also offers daily lunch specials ranging
from chili dogs to an awesome huge BBQ sandwich all usually for around
four bucks or so. It’s a great place to eat lunch during your
stay in Helen Georgia.
There are plenty of places to sit outside at shaded picnic tables,
or at the bar stools inside with the air conditioning. There are always
sample available of stuff you have most likely never tried. The atmosphere
is definitely old style country with tons of old farm store advertising
and country memorabilia lining the walls you can view while walking
on the hardwood floors.
I
don’t have the exact year that the store was established, but
one guy there told me they opened in the early seventies. Weather you
visit this place as a gift shop, or your just stopping in to grab a
can of beans, or aluminum foil, or to stack up on general groceries
and supplies, one thing you do not want to miss out on when you visit
is a cup of the vanilla or chocolate homemade ice cream being freshly
churned right outside the front door. They have a gas powered ice cream
churner churning out buckets of homemade ice cream well into the evening.
Grab a bench, sit under the shade at a picnic table, challenge a friend
to a game of checkers, take a load off, and take a few minutes to just
enjoy being here. If your not here for at least thirty minutes, you
missed the idea.
