Helen Georgia On The Way – Hot Boiled Peanuts

Subscribe

If you are a regular traveler to the north Georgia Mountains, you know hot boiled peanuts are a staple item up here. The beauty is that each vendors hot boiled peanuts has a unique quality all its own. This is one vendor that I continually return to time and time again. I’m not sure if it’s just the excellent taste and texture of the product, or the quality and camaraderie of the vendor and his wife, but it is one of my favorites. They will at times toss in a small piece of scripture with your bag of peanuts stating for instance “Not let your heart be troubled”.

The vendor Dale Parker definitely looks the mountain man part with his long beard and hat, he owns the old country home directly across the street from where he sells his famous hot boiled peanuts, and homemade jams and jellies. The old home was built just after the civil war, and still has the old time tin roof. Dale has raised four kids there, and you can tell from talking to him that he is a good man. Dale is not much of a talker all the time, but if you catch him right, and at a time he’s not running in circles, you can buy some peanuts have a seat, and get to know this fellow a bit. Dale is quite a bit older than I am, but I am trying to make it a point that every trip I make up into the North Georgia Mountains and Helen Georgia, that I slow down, stop by Dales Peanut stand, buy a cup of his hot boiled peanuts, and try to chat with him. I have a hunch Dale could tell you some real good interesting stories.

Cost: Whatever jams or jellies you want to buy, but a cup of hot boiled peanuts is $4.00
Getting There: Coming from Atlanta and I-285 you will be traveling up Ga. 400 North,
Ga. 400 North will end, and just about 1.5 miles after Ga. 400 North ends,
you will see his Peanut stand on the right hand side.
Time: As long as you like, pull up a chair and stay awhile
Are we there yet? This is probably around 35 to 45 minutes before you get to Helen Georgia.
