Helen Georgia - LaCabana Express Mexican Restaurant

If you find yourself in the mood for excellent mexican food while visiting Helen, Ga., you will definitely appreciate this place. I'm not certain how long they have been here, but they have been here for as long as I can remember which has been a long time. There are good reasons for this mexican restaurants longevity. For starters, the food is excellent. The first time I ate here I was somewhat leary of how good the food would be at a mexican restaurant located up in the North Ga. Mountains, but I was really in the mood for mexican food, and that was several years ago, and it was a great gamble, because as it turns out, LaCabana is now one of my all time favorite mexican diners, and is one of my regular favorite spots I try to dine at with every visit.

 

Hot plate, hot plate is a guarantee, the food is served very hot and fresh, the ground beef is not mush like the ground beef at many lower end mexican diners. The ground beef is larger chunks, the beans are perfectly cooked to the right texture, and all of the soft tortilla shells are cooked to a level that gives them a almost soft chewy texture. My typical order is one beef and on bean burrito no lettuce, add sour cream. I'm rarely able to move past this menu choice, but whenever I do get up the nerve to expand my horizons, Lacabana never dissapoints. I try to choose at least one different food menu choice with every visit, and I'm always satisfied with every item I've ever ordered here.

I'm personally not a drinker, but I know on a weekend evening the patio is packed, and the margaritas are flowing heavily among a happy crowd enjoying the mild evening social activity for drinkers. The restauarant is located right in the heart of the Helen, Ga. main strip just a few hundred feet from the Wendy's restaurant sort of ha;fway between Wendy's and the bridge going over the river. After a good dinner and a few drinks, you can walk right out and enjoy shopping at all the Helen, Ga. gift shops.

The LaCabana Express offers indoor temperature controlled dining, or well shaded outdoor tables with umbrellas. The outdoor deck is a excellent place for a group of friends dining together because the patio is fairly small, dimly lit, and the tables are fairly close together making for somewhat of a cozy environment. On weekends, LaCabana offers live entertainment out on the patio. The entertainment is typically a decent giutarist / singer playing and singing classic hits from 60's, 70's, and 80's.

The pricing is beyond fair, and is generally in line with what you will typically pay at any mexican restaurant located in a larger more populated area like Atlanta, and of course you get the standard mexican restaurant you get the free chips with salsa dip. So if you find yourself in the mexican food mode while in Helen, Ga., give this place a shot, I can assure you you will not be dissapointed.
