Unicoi State Park is a great place to stay while visiting
Helen Georgia. The upside is that it’s for the most part a resort
within itself, and many people will stay here, and never even go into
Helen Ga. The downside is that it’s about a ten minute drive to
the main part of Helen Georgia, but either way, the advantages and disadvantages
wash out, or for the most part makes Unicoi State park a good choice.
There
is enough to do within the Unicoi State Park to take up an entire weekend
with never leaving. Between the beach area, canoe rental, paddle boat
rental, and fishing at the Unicoi Lake, you could keep you and an entire
family entertained for the entire weekend.
Unicoi state park also offers easy to more complex hiking trails all
beginning at the lodge, and excellent food choices from a breakfast,
lunch, and dinner buffet, to local restaurants nearby such as the Tanglewood.
Also, the entrance to Anna Ruby Falls is just minute from the Unicoi
State Park, and the park offers some of the most excellent picnic and
grill areas available anywhere around Helen Georgia.
If you do decide to stay here, trust me when I say drive up to the
Anna Ruby Falls parking area (parking is $2.00) which is just a few
minutes from the Unicoi Lodge area, and have a grill out or picnic right
on a gorgeous mountain river just to the right of the Anna Ruby Falls
trail entrance and visitors center.
There are rooms available at the main lodge which are more like hotel
rooms, and then there are the three sets of cabins. The three sets of
cabins are A, B, and C. Be aware that if you stay in cabin set C, you
can wind up with a heck of a uphill walk from your cabin to where you
park, so if you are ill health or elderly, you may want to make sure
and ask for a cabin close to your parking area, but cabin set C are
real wood cabins. Cabin set B has a little less strenuous access, but
these are not really cabins at all, they are more like partial circle
metal boxes painted green in other words their ugly. Cabin set A to
me are the best, they have the cabin look and feel, the walk to and
from the parking area is mild, and they are located closest to the Unicoi
Lake.
None
of the cabins are right on the lake, so if you have a desire to stay
where you have decent lake access, you should stay in cabin set A, and
this will give you decent lake access. The view of the lake is minimal
from any of the cabins except during the fall and winter when all the
leaves have fallen off the trees.
Unicoi State Park offers many events such as music entertainment, and
nature classes and artist exhibits throughout the year, and there is
a number you can call to get the most current schedule of activities.
Unicoi State Park also offers the Smith Creek Cabins, which is on the
parkway going towards Anna Ruby Falls. These are nice cabins as far
as access goes because you can essentially pull directly up to the front
of your cabin and park. There is trout fishing available directly across
the street in the smith
creek,
but be aware that smith creek right along the cabin area is very narrow,
and shallow. the creek is stocked, but given how narrow and shallow
the creek is along this section,
I would not count on catching anything of any size out of this section.
So if your after some large trout you may have to do some extensive
wading to get to some holes deep enough to catch the big ones.
I have found the trout fishing to be much better in the Chattahoochee
River running through Helen Georgia, or up in the wildlife management
area. But don't let that change your mind about staying here, because
the Chattahoochee River is just a few minutes drive from the cabins.
These are decent little cabins, though there are no decks to cook out
on as you can see, but each cabin does have access to a picnic table
and grill.
