Helen Ga Back
to Helen Ga. Things to Do
This is definitely a nearby Helen Georgia Jewel. Located just a few
miles from the Helen Georgia Alpine Village, the Unicoi State Park has
a ton to offer. Unicoi State Park is a resort within itself weather
you ever even go into the Helen Ga Alpine Village or not. Hiking, camping,
fishing, canoeing, and paddle boats are just a few of the activities
offered up by the most beloved state park. The park surrounds Unicoi
Lake, one of the absolute most gorgeous small mountain lakes. Unicoi
Lake is a crystal clear mountain lake that is fed from Anna Ruby Falls
via Smith Creek. The Unicoi Lake is slap full of large bass, crappie,
and catfish. I have heard stories of big bass weighing in at over fourteen
pounds being pulled out of this lake. The campgrounds have a nice wooded
feel with plenty of big pines to keep you in the cool shade all day.
There is abundant wildlife, so don’t be too surprised to see a
deer run through the campgrounds, or cross the road on your way to and
from your camp site or cabin.
One thing I really liked
is that the lodge is opened till 12:00 every night; this allowed me
to break away from the rugged campsite environment for a few hours before
turning in, watch the news, and check my email with the wireless internet
access available at the lodge. The wireless internet access can be picked
up outside of the lodge which is actually where I’m writing this
piece from at 1:00 in the morning. Can you say insomniac?
There are plenty of nearby hiking trails including several easy hikes
beginning right at the parks lodge, also Anna ruby Falls Rd. the road
which leads up to Anna Ruby Falls is just about a half mile down from
the Unicoi Lake. Unicoi Lake has a perfect low impact yet highly scenic
hiking trail around the lake, which includes several resting spots via
decks overlooking the Unicoi Lake.
There are several choices for nearby trout fishing. Smith creek which
part of runs through the Unicoi Park, and you can travel a few miles
into Helen Georgia, and fish the Chattahoochee River, or if you really
want to get away from the tourist areas, you can fish the Chattahoochee
River up in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area. Smith Creek,
and The Chattahoochee River portion located in the Chattahoochee Wildlife
Management area are both seasonal trout streams, but the majority of
the Chattahoochee River running through Helen Ga is year round trout
fishing.
If you like the idea of being able to sit out on a dock and fish late
into the night, in a beautiful mountain lake, here’s a hint. If
you camp here, you can walk down from your campsite down a trail, to
the Unicoi Lake, there is a somewhat secluded fishing doc you can sit
at and catch big ones late into the night without a sole bothering you.
Just refer to the map when requesting your campsite for a site that
will get you closest to the dock.
The Unicoi State Park also offers lodge rooms, cabins, and also cottages
with a lakeside view. The lodge offers fireplace, gift shop, wireless
internet access, and best of all, all you can eat buffet. I personally
am a breakfast pig. I love having a nice big breakfast to start my day.
Biscuits and gravy, sausage, eggs, and bacon, washed down with a nice
clean tasting sweet tea with lemon for me there is no better way to
start the day. This nice buffet can be had for just $7.99 includes drink.
Now that’s a steal…
The only breakfast buffet I would take over this on is at the Farmers
Market Cafe located right in the heart of Helen Georgia, it’s
a little more expensive, but as far as breakfast buffets goes, this
place is hands down the best for taste.

With all the things to do here, I could almost do an entire website
about Unicoi State Park.
But the main thing I want to leave you with, is a handful of good pictures,
know that there is a breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet, plenty of
weekly events, and great fishing in the Unicoi Lake.
